Paro

Home to Bhutan's only international airport, perched in a high valley at roughly 2,300m. Traditional architecture lines the riverbanks; landing here is famously the most demanding of any commercial airport in the world.

Thimphu

The capital. Population 100,000. It is the only national capital in the world without a traffic light; a single police officer directs cars at one downtown intersection instead. The race ends at the foot of the 51-meter golden Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley.

Climate in late October

Daytime 15–20°C. After sunset, near-freezing. The peak holds its own weather. Layer up before you feel cold.

Temples, dzongs, and chortens are living sacred places, and the kingdom protects all life. The specifics, how visitors dress, when a camera is welcome, how to carry yourself near a shrine, are set by Bhutan and laid out in full by its tourism board.

Built into a sheer cliff above the Paro valley, Taktsang Monastery is Bhutan's most sacred site. Legend says Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century, meditated in a cave for three months, and so blessed the kingdom.

The hike takes about five hours round-trip. There's a café halfway up with views of the monastery framed by Himalayan peaks. For most runners, this is the day the trip becomes real.
